Three of these are done on a 3x4 sketch pad. I am doing at least 100 of them and then having a show displaying them in a 10x10 grid on a big wall. Each piece will be like 5 bucks or so. The Plane Grabber is another colored version of one of the pages from the Monsterama Book. Enjoy

Black and White

ok, another one-armed beastie. I have been working in colored pencil on top of inked work and I really like the look of things. I was teaching my classes how to use them and it got me to thinking about how to make my drawings in color. So I tried it and voila! It worked! So, I am taking the pics for my monsterama book and adding color to them. I figure, I scanned em so I can use em for zines but I can do whatever I want with the originals. YAY.

Michael Roden- Thru Black Holes

Michael Roden was an indie artist and musician for over 30 years. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1952, he discovered the work of HP Lovecraft in the early 70s and was inspired to begin drawing fantastic creatures and alien landscapes. Soon he was reading underground comix and was inspired by the freedom and experimental artwork of the cartoonists producing them. The era of self-publishing was beginning to take off and Roden began work on an art magazine he called Thru Black Holes. He explained the title in an interview in 1980, "...because of the nature of the black hole itself — sucking in matter and expelling it into some other realm of existence. In the case of Thru Black Holes the idea was to pull in other talents and give the reader a ride along with us into strange artistic realms." His first issue debuted in May 1978."




"Roden also loved music and formed the Thru Black Holes Band, releasing 24 indie collections from 1989 through 2004. Aural-Innovations hosts the Band's official website, where you can download all of the Band's music in mp3 format.

In early 2007, Roden was diagnosed with colon cancer. He passed away on June 14, 2007 at age 55, leaving behind medical expenses that are still remain to be paid. Several benefit sales have been set up to contribute to closing out his outstanding debts. Small press publisher Dan W. Taylor and mini-comic dealer Rick Bradford have generously set up benefit sales areas within their online stores. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Roden Benefit Fund."

I made rattles with my 7th graders and grotesque jugs with my 6th graders last semester. Somehow, I merged both into one and this is what I came out with.

this is a 2 page comic i made for Renate no.XIII/#13, which had "the bible" as a theme. it came out in september 2004, 'n was edited by my good ol' friend harald "don toraneko" kuhn, here in berlin. inside you will also find contributions from max "pixy" andersson & zven "smittekilde" balslev.

Books!

Here's a large portion of my book collection and a few toys. The large black thing standing on the giant Lovecraft book on the top is actually a sculpture I made that I want to eventually turn into a ten foot tall statue. Hidden somewhere inbetween a few of those books are xeroxed pages of a good chunk of an unpublished Tobias Tak graphic novel. The Diane Arbus book near the top I bought for 2 bucks at a used book store, one of my favorite photography books, has a lot of people with mental disabilities wearing halloween masks, really strange imagery. Just below that is another of my favorite books, a large collection of Piranesi's Prison etchings.

Black in Back

Yes.I'm glad too.

I've been drawing up a storm lately, propelled by the recent acquisition of an actual "client". I've sold a few things here and there, but this new guy bought a bunch. I'd like to think it doesn't matter. It doesn't , in a way- I'm sure I'd still draw- but this little incentive has given me a little push, to be sure.

Listening:

-Dead Moon

- Lot's of old metal, like Metal Church, Iron Maiden, Sodom , early Accept and lots more. I'm trying to dig deeper into more obscure metal, but money is an issue. A lot of times, even if the music isn't top notch, I still get a lot out of the covers, logos, photos,etc.. Something about that era really gets me. Hard to explain.

Watching- Battlestar Season 4. Anybody else?
I got The Dark Knight for Xmas and have been watching the shit out of it too. I don't think it's a perfect movie, but there's some kind of power that overrides those flaws.

I've started a new "solo" blog. It's more of an online scrapbook. Check it out HERE. I continue to use Flickr a lot. That sort of satisfies that urge to post my drawings. If you haven't done so yet, hit me up on Flickr , Myspace and Facebook..

OLD STUFF

It's kind of terrifying how much work i do. I just realized that there are hundreds of drawings that i did over the last year that i haven't scanned in! Anyhow, here are some things i've been keeping from you.

Bilbo's meeting with Smaug. I've grown increasingly annoyed with the Peter Jackson/Brothers Hildebrandt interpretation of the Lord of the Rings stuff & decided to take it to the extreme nachos 1988 style of semi-representationism.
