Announcing Tarot Goblinko by Sean Äaberg

Hello Eaten By Ducks! For my next feat of artistic & occult strength I will be producing a Tarot Deck - the Tarot Goblinko by Sean Äaberg. I have been doing a new card for each issue of PORK magazine that has come out recently where my wife Katie has been picking the cards & I've been drawing them in order. It has been a very intense series so far & I have found myself resonating with the tarot in a way that I have never previously. I will be putting the same amount of energy into the Major & Minor Arcana. We will be launching a kickstarter on Friday the 13th this April to get this project funded & so I can have the time to really give my all to each of the 78+ Tarot Cards. We'll be shooting for an end goal of having the deck produced in blacklight reactive ink. Here are some of the cards I've done so far.

Everyone who backs the Tarot Goblinko kickstarter on the first day will get the Early Bird card as a kickstarter exlclusive!

You can get posters & the issues of PORK with these covers from the GOBLINKO MEGAMALL.

MY GOTT! DUNGEON DEGENERATES IS HERE!

Dungeon Degenerates - Hand of Doom is the biggest project Goblinko has created to date & it arrived in Portland on Halloween, 2017. We've spent the last two weeks getting a thousand kickstarter backed copies out to our backers & now we're gearing up for our big Christmas Sale. What started out as a combat card game that we asked our friend Eric Radey to write rules for has grown into a monstrous board game with an enormous world to explore - full of intrigue, weirdness, terror & lowlife elements. We put our full 100% into this game & it really shows.

I did an absurd amount of art for this game. Every card has unique art - every monster & every loot is a new piece of art. The Rules & The Missions books are heavily illustrated as well. Game Designer Eric Radey went the extra mile as well - the rules are smooth & effective & the thing drips with background information. It is an intense, immersive & new fantasy world that is both familiar & surprising at the same time.

Dungeon Degenerates incorporates tons of Goblinko themes that we've developed over the years & you will find yourself immersed in the life-changing weirdness that we've spent almost 20 years creating. Sausages, midgets, the occult, drugs, fungus, S&M, Euro-Strangeness, Shamanism, societal disfunction, cults & Goblins are just some of the things waiting you in Dungeon Degenerates.

WITCH HILL

I guess the idea of Eaten By Ducks being dead really laid a stink, like a rotting carcass does in the back corners of my brain. Anyhow - here's what I'm working on right now. For Dungeon Degenerates - this is a poster/cover art for the part of the Wurstreich known as the Witch Woods & specifically Witch Hill. The old cults of the Black Goat of the Woods claim it as their own but the Imperial agents of the Wurstreich recognize it as a powerful place that needs to be controlled. Here's the first progress shot. Sometimes - instead of doing the drawing completely in each rendering level, I go ahead & get into sections before I've even pencilled other areas because I'm so excited to get rolling on the real drawing.

Here's the finished drawing. I'm channeling the idea of how book, movie & video game covers frequently misrepresent the things inside - partially because the artist has never read, watched or played the media item - but also - the nature of covers capturing the sensational aspects of the thing in order to trigger interest always works. Anyhow, despite the fact that I'm doing all the art for Dungeon Degenerates & have worked intimately on the game & theme itself - I wanted to view the game through the sensationalistic qualities of a Black Light poster or record cover instead of carefully illustrating some nuanced or linear elements of the game's lore.

DUNGEON DEGENERATES

I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE BOARD GAME DUNGEON DEGENERATES FOR THE PAST YEAR - IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING ALONG - I STARTED PRODUCING CARD ART FOR THIS WAY BACK IN 2007 OR SOMETHING WHEN I REALIZED THAT I STILL WANTED TO DO ILLUSTRATIONS FOR A FANTASY ROLE PLAYING GAME. TEN YEARS LATER - WE'VE LAUNCHED GOBLINKO'S FIRST BOARD GAME - DUNGEON DEGENERATES - WITH MY CHILDHOOD FRIEND & LONG-TIME CREATIVE PARTNER ERIC RADEY. HERE'S SEVEN NEW POSTERS I CREATED FOR THE GAME.

THE COLORS ARE INFLUENCED DIRECTLY BY EARLY VIDEO GAMES' LIMITED COLOR USE & BOLD, HALLUCINOGENIC COLORS SHINING OUT OF THE BLACKNESS - LIKE PULSATING BLACK LIGHT POSTERS COME TO LIFE. THE ART & TONE ARE PART OF MY BROADER WORK OF ROCK&ROLL, DRUGS, DEMONOLOGY & SEX & FUNKY, WEIRD, SLEAZY UNDERBELLY TYPE SHEEIT. YOU CAN GET THE POSTERS HERE.  AND YOU CAN PRE-ORDER THE DUNGEON DEGENERATES BOARD-GAME HERE.

HALLOWEEN IS EVERY DAY!!!

Hello Ducks. Long time - no see... I've been going Halloween crazy - first re-committed PORK magazine to establishing a permanent Halloween populated by monsters. I'm quite stoked with this cover. It's an ultimate dungeon party with a hallucinogenic witch's brew. We also got KAZ on board doing comix now which is fucking radical.
Meanwhile I've been launching tons of new Halloween products like this Halloween Haunted House poster. I thought about the crazy feeling I'd get Trick or Treating as a little kid, how disoriented I'd get going door to door, especially if the house was decked out. There were a couple Haunted Houses that were really nightmarish as a kid. One of them had a Vampire in a coffin that would come out & chase Trick or Treaters that got too close. I was also thinking about the first Punk House parties I went to & how I'd get a similar, disoriented, freaked out, but very pleased feeling at them.
Finally, I designed these Halloween Cut-Out Decorations. All this stuff is coming out under the Halloween Island brand from the GOBLINKO MEGAMALL. These are inspired by the old Beistle Halloween Vintage Paper Decorations, but obviously in my WEIRDO ART style.

I'm doing very well, I'm working too hard, but it has payed off. We've got seven paid employees at GOBLINKO now & it's all housed in its own house even! Me & Katie are the lowest paid employees as the owners, but it's cool cos we're doing exactly what we want to do & it's really been taking off.

Hellmouth

I've been wanting to start a store for a while now... but the whole cyber world & the terrible economy make it almost stupid to start a real world, physical store. Which totally sucks, because a real store is where it's at. Anyhow, i'm gonna start this thing up online first, as a distro for Metal, Punk, Trash Culture & Occult crap. If that works out & i'm pulling money in, i'll open up a storefront & make that shit look wild.

Aeron featured a whole mess of Hellmouths on Monster Brains. CHECK IT OUT!
Here's the argument against online businesses just like that. Presentation. Real world presentation. You can't beat it. You can control the lighting, the smell, the sounds, how stuff is displayed, what people see upon entering, all that stuff. Fire up my smoke machine for special events... weird smelling incense burning all the time. Maybe some retarded black cat lurking around... etc.

Yo, does anyone know what that green monstrous door, i think it's French, from the Art Nouveau period is called? I'm trying to get a good picture of it.

Pipu's Eye

Page from the upcoming issue of Pipu, "Pipu's Eye".
Pipu's Eye
Something weird is going on with Pipu where my art is starting to look like Shigeru Mizuki's. In other news, the local comic shop has a million old "Heavy Metal" magazines from 1978 to 1985 all priced at $1.50 & i'm having a hard time not buying too many of them.

ALSO, i gave my long-running button business a name & put it up online. Check it out!

Monster Korner & You Can't Stop Rock & Roll

I'm teaching a print making class for kids at the art center right now. Today we made rubber cuts. I made a flying eye, a stitched up wound & a bone with meat on it as well.

This photo kind of sums up alot of my philosophy of culture. Speaking of which, just watched Pee-wee's Big Adventure again the other day, fantastic, just the same as when i was a kid, & every time i see anything Pee-wee related I am completely struck at how his aesthetic is nearly the same as mine & god bless Paul Reubens & his entire milieu. He was a Punk Rocker you know? That's how he met Gary Panter who was doing Punk fliers in LA.
MONSTER KORNER

Also, my Twisted Sister obsession is rekindled every so-often. This time it was from watching Pee-wee's Big Adventure & watching this video over & over again. The dedication is priceless. I thought this kind of stuff didn't have impact anymore when i was in my teens & there was that whole push towards "extreme" in the 90s, but man, you go anywhere looking like these guys (in their denim & leather tough guy outfits or their stage drag) & everyone is gonna be afraid to talk to you. Twisted Sister have a direct connection to the Ramones & the Dictators so don't scoff man. They're bad ass. Dee Snider rules. He was hosting a horror oriented radio show at some point.

You're A Killer?

I like the new masthead quite a bit.
I'm working on a new card series. Name is something like "Mostly Monsters" or "Monster Mash" or something like that. It's a world of monsters & nazi bananas.
This is Myron, named for the Jerry Lewis character in "Scared Stiff".

Be Bad, Be Glad.

Funny, even though the spread of the internet was the death nell for zines as the awesome micro/macro media they were/are, i've found all sorts of great archives of old zines online which i am now looting & pillaging to create some new zines in the physical world. One day, when we are living on space stations in some alternate dimension, i'm sure it'll be just as weird. Anyhow, check out this great blog "PUNKS IS HIPPIES" full of lots of archived Punk zines.

Just watched the Bela Lugosi Dracula for the first time in quite a while. Fantastic. Just fantastic. Get in the Halloween mood & watch it yourself!

MARK A LOT

I love markers. They are by far, my favorite thing to work with in the world of art. They are fun to look at, fun to collect, fun to draw with & look good when you have lots of them. Here are my coloring markers.

MARK A LOT

I tend to use the sharpies more than the copics as they sharpies are 1/6th the price & have some bolder colors & i've worked out a whole system with them. The copics are very nice markers, but are too expensive. They are refillable though, so that makes up for their price. I have been discouraged from using markers as my primary medium many times, but i always come back to them. Two of my favorite artists use markers primarily.

I was introduced to Vaughn Bode via a combination of graffiti, Ralph Bakshi's Wizards (Vaughn was supposed to work on this but they had some kind of falling out & then Vaughn died) & his son Mark doing my favorite issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Vaughn Bode named his son Mark after "Marker".

Pedro Bell is famous for his work for Funkadelic doing covers like Cosmic Slop. Bell's work is some crazy Cosmic Slop in its own way & is like the Funky Black Futurist parallel to the work of Cal Schenkel for Frank Zappa. He got his start doing cartoons & writing for his college newspaper & you can find alot of his early stuff reprinted in issues of Roctober.

RIP Gary Gygax

I hear that Gary Gygax, the inventor of Dungeons & Dragons just died at age 69.
beholder
The whole "imagination with rules" thing is pretty weird, but apparently i like it. Making up little rules for everything, & then breaking all the rules. The best thing about Dungeons & Dragons was the big lists & the monsters & that they hired artists who weren't so polished & had their own weird, quirky styles. Old role playing games were more like zines & self-published stuff in that they hadn't been so processed by the big money concerns & were pretty flukey & strange & all sorts of crazy stuff got thrown into them. The old D&D & AD&D books are right up there with the Johnson Smith Catalog & Mad Magazine & Maximum RocknRoll & Factsheet Five in terms of compendiums of weirdness with small type.

I think Aeron should do a giant monster manual feature for his crazy monster blog.
