Primate parley

Luke talked a little about the (mis)uses of primate studies in discussing human behavior. This article seems like a much more thoughtful effort to relate primate and human behaviors.

Fighting Fantasy

There's been some talk about RPGs on this blog, so I thought I'd post a few drawings I did recently for a Fighting Fantasy-like solo adventure. These are not illustrations of actual scenes but more like vignettes which are going to be scattered about the book to set the mood. In it you play a guy who tries to escape from a castle where he is imprisoned.

HELMET LAND or, TIME TO GROW A PAIR AMERICA!

One of my comic drawing students & his mum saw me riding my bike to work the other day. About an hour into the class he asks me, "Mr. Sean, why weren't you wearing a helment while you rode your bike?" I took a moment & replied, "Because when i was a kid, we didn't care about safety. No one wore bike helmets. No one wore elbow pads & knee pads. You didn't even have to wear a seat belt. People smoked & it wasn't the end of the world." The kids were flabbergasted that people didn't wear seatbelts or helmets. If only the kid & his mom had seen me riding through Oakland drinking a 40 oz. of Coors & smoking a black & mild like i used to after work! These are the same kids that are spending more & more time interpreting reality through electronic boxes. If the kids are this conditioned to paranoiac wimp helmet culture, just think about their parents! Bloody terrifying if you ask me. There is a lot of talk about how sad it is that the middle class is shrinking, but if you ask me, they've never done anyone a lick of good.

Crius, and Cyclopses

Crius is the greater titan of density and strength, and we've also got two cyclopses (cyclopsim? cyclopsi?), one greater and one lesser. This drawing really got kind of screwed up; the bit in the upper left was me trying to cover up a damp mark on the paper which I'd accidentally perpetrated (I draw on the dining room table, so this sort of thing happens) and the black bit at the bottom just turned into a mess (layers of black with ballpoint pen = argh). But I really liked the cyclops drawing, so I didn't want to trash the whole drawing, and so, well, here it is.

Remember all of those crazy totemic things i was working on last spring or so?

I worked up a new one using my newish super-laborious inking style as inspired by R. Crumb, Basil Wolverton & Ed Roth. It was fun.

I've also been reading a good visually oriented book on Taoism from 1973. I've learned that jade is congealed dragon semen. I've never really liked jade, but now i do. I also got to thinking about the difference between European dragons & Chinese dragons, in that European dragons are evil & stupid, while Chinese dragons are wise & good luck. I'm teaching a class called "Drawing Monsters, Dragons & Dinosaurs" on saturday mornings, this last saturday we covered dragons. One kid made his dragon breath alphabet blocks, which was quite strange but worked out. I've had very strong Taoist leanings since 1998, but i haven't really discussed it with anyone. Having also studied alchemy, it is pretty apparent that Taoism contains, among other things, Chinese Alchemy, with just about the same ideas operating within. Although, i like Taoism more because it is a very rich & varied way of looking at the world.

If you're like me, Europe has alot of attraction, but also, it is pretty disappointing. The race towards power & seemingly endless war has left the entire culture quite empty & distorted. Add to that the ravages of Imperial Catholicism & then life-denying Protestantism. As an American with European ancestry i find myself looking to Europe for cues, as America is quite empty & distorted as well, but there's not alot there for me. Once again, i find myself snipping little bits from here & there... but that's not enough. There is nothing like the greater culture, all breathing together & having something common to build from. Once again i find myself at that scary point where i want to take those first steps, to pioneer this new thing... but it is quite nerve wracking.

saturday night special

This is a doodle I did on saturday night, in the depths of my brain a Goya picture that I don't know the title of may have been lurking, 'cause the bodies on a branch thing sort of makes me think of that.

Atlas, Bellerophon, Cerberus

Bellerophon is a hero who rides a winged horse; Cerberus is the three-headed dog who guards the gates of hell; Atlas is a Titan who holds up the world. To quote the tomb in question "...there is nothine he can't lift, nothing he can't bend, and nothing he can't break! Despite his alignment, if he gives his word on a matter, he will keep it even unto death!"



The text on the illustration reads, "Today, without warning, I will fear dirt and love vegetables."
