Ok. Sean and I were talking yesterday and I got to thinking. I am a part of the Art Dorks Collective which has kind of pittered out. The site began as an open forum and portfolio site for anyone who liked the drawing. The collective formed and later decided that the galleries were not going to take us seriously due to some of the commenters on the forum so it became a closed thing. Then it all just died a bit.
So here we are at the apex of a new blog. do we want this to be a little inbred thing where we all stroke each others egos or do we want real discourse about art, comics and images. Art is not just pretty pics. It has meaning, even if we don't know what they mean. It has context and relevance to the culture and time we are living. I really want there to be some tough discussions about what we do. This might mean we talk about things some might not know anything about or that we criticize our work for its content, execution or relevance. This is what makes it tough. Egos get bruised, intellects get stretched out of shape. But isn't that just great?
So here it is, the big question for all of you.
What do you want this to be?
Are you willing to let it grow into something challenging or do you want to play it safe? Whaddaya say kids? Ready to play with the big kids toys?

Spore Horder
-A few examples of what I've been up to lately. More like glorified sketches than anything else. Feel like the dam busted over the last couple of weeks, and I have that feeling again about drawing. No preparation, no figures, really, just draw.
I haven't quite cracked the code with this stuff though. It comes to you as you lay down to sleep after staying up way too late drawing- 'Oh, shit, that's exactly what I shoulda done...'

Deconstructing Murphy
Here's a preview of my Voida Voida contribution. In the Zine the images will be "colored" in greyscales though.

Avid followers of my internet exploits might notice that it's kind of a follow-up to my contribution to the first TCJ narrative corpse. For all you not-so-avid followers out there, here are some links to the corpse pages in question:

THERE'S ONLY 363 DAYS LEFT!!!
HOLY JESUS!!! I just found THIS... VIRTUAL NES. Now i can play ABADOX whenever i want!!!
Also, i was just watching the YAMATO movie last night. Oh man, i love anything Leiji Matsumoto makes, but the insane pride, romance, nationalism/earthianism & space operaticness of YAMATO really gets me every time, with the ballad ringing out & the great Yamato space battleship rising out of the dead earth... wow!

1988 MULLET FEVER
I used to draw a character who had a mullet back in 1988, he was some kind of super-human vigilante with a big gun. He was also my central character in the endless dystopian future campaign we were running in middle school. He was in a love triangle between his ordinary girlfriend & a cloned bioroid pop sensation called MIKI. They lived in a super-dimensional fortress which was based on the SDF-1 from Robotech & MEGA-CITY 1 from Judge Dredd. Anyhow, in 1988 everyone had a mullet & no one even knew what the damn thing was called anyhow. It was just the hairstyle that men worth knowing had. Around this time, i had a mullet with lines, just like the characters in this new picture called "DUBBL DRAGN" (which i beat in the arcade on 1 quarter in 1988). The story of Double Dragon is set in a post-apocalyptic version of New York City, five years after a nuclear war, where gangs and criminal organizations have taken control of the city.
Mike Patton doesn't have a mullet here, but he has the short side patch with lines. Even though this came out in 1990, this is pure 1988, the world just wasn't ready yet.
I might have to get lines again.

EXTRA DIMENSIONAL FORTRESS HO!
Exterior of the Extra-Dimensional Fortress

Interior of the Extra-Dimensional Fortress

Concepts: Utopian project gone the way of all human creations: CHAOS. Rolling self-contained hyper urban city is infected with extra-dimensional mutated marketting virus, which merges with the physical fabric of the city & the whole thing becomes an organic, mind-reading land of commercialism & technology. Generations upon generations of people live in this Extra-Dimensional Fortress (built to survive nuclear holocaust or even escape the destruction of the earth by flying into outer space), degenerating from advanced civilization into tribal urban animism.
ZINES: There has been some talk back & forth between myself & other Eaten By Duckers about putting together zines. I'm totally interested but also totally swamped. But we need to do this. Let's discuss it.

Welcome to Bio-Burger, can i take your order?

This is how the future will look in case you were wondering. The future of Goblinko comix that is. Next episode of Salt features the new EXTRA DIMENSIONAL FORTRESS where everyone lives, which is either rolling around earth on giant tank treads or floating in space. The enterior of this thing is just going to be a big commercial mess full of visual chaos & clutter & impossible geometry.

I wish that the United States was more like the pictures i draw
From a series of Modernist inspired limited palate pieces i was working on the summer of 2006. There's one other, but it sold & i don't think i scanned it in. I'm quite pleased with them still & will probably work in this style again.
I like to draw people/things carrying pigs, i also have a collection of pictures of people carrying pigs around. I love pigs & butchers. I wish that the United States was more like the pictures i draw. Most traditional butchers in the USA serve the yuppie niche market, so they aren't actually traditional. Seems that way for most things, old world foods & traditions serve a niche yuppie market & eschew working class values like being tough as nails, gregarious & cheap. I would like to buy an enormous tankard of locally made lager (pitcher sized) for $3 & get a fresh made pretzel & some cheese on the side in a working class atmosphere but it ain't happening. This is why i must draw this stuff.

This android bear busker has a crazy steam powered, amplified accordion. I am not into buskers in general, but there is something pathetic & heart warming about this poor little android bear & his high-tech old world instrument.

Maybe one day after commercial space travel has gotten cheap enough for us all to go out & become space pioneers, i'll be able to start my own planet with stuff like this going on.

Strange Dreaming..
I was in an old castle at the top of a small European village when a gigantic door banged open releasing a gigantic armored figure. The armor looked ancient and had intricately engraved patterns, some resembling narrative scenes that I couldn't make out, spread across each piece. The thing wearing the armor was some sort of hideous creature that partly resembled a rabbit/pig/donkey all meshed into a grotesque hybrid that had the body of a gigantic humanoid, about 12 feet tall. It chased me around a circular passageway inside the castle. When I'd managed to get away from it, another door slammed open somewhere else in the castle releasing yet another of these foul armored beasts that began chasing me!
I eventually escaped the things and found myself in a small stone passageway where a shallow collection of water had gathered in a small stream across the floor. Then I noticed there were peculiar octopus like animals walking on their tentacles and partly swimming over the few inches of water. I remember one being a light yellowish color, about the size of a human head with short stubby tentacles that pulled its weight aross the stream. Another was much larger and dark brown and black in color with long extended tentacles and what looked like thick wet black matted hair hanging from the top of its balloon like head. At some pont I escaped the castle and ran into a madman who was crawling up the mountain towards the castle. I kicked him in the face and caused him to fall down the steep incline. From there things get hazy..

IQ-Nine
Wakanahayneehayneeho

I have been doing a lot of drawings in my usual dense style but I wanted to do a few things without all the "noise". This one is called "Trailing Magic" and is a random drawing that I redrew from my sketchbook. The original had manboobs and I wish I had included them but I forgot. Sorry manboob lovers. More soon including some clay for Sean.
