The Whore Of Babylon

I guess I'm a sucker for the classics.

This is a panel from some new project in which comics and poetry are put together. However my writing parner is not a poet but a researcher into the world of sex workers. So we are isolating some quotes from her interviews and I'll try and think of images to them. Not quite sure how this works out, but we all should try something new, once in a while.
Instead of the markers I usually take, I am using an old-fashioned dip pen and Indian ink. Which turns out to be more fun than I thought it would be.

I heard a really... depressing interview with Maurice Sendak on "Fresh Air" last month. Look it up if you wanna unguarded portrait of an aging icon.

The Waste

I decided to fuck around with some color ideas I've had on this guy, "the waste". For such a terrifying & gross figure I find him to be weirdly beautiful. I should do a character made out of trash like those medieval food people illustrations.

The Taste Of Water, in colour

The almost-final version of my take on this remarkable Dutch film from the early 1980s. The panel lines are still a bit off, but that has been fixed.

Que suerte Explosion

Hey kids you've to buy Que suerte, comic zine made in Spain by Olaf Ladousse!
I made 2 pages comic & a linoprint for the inside cover. Unfortunately, Olaf couldn't find a printer for lino so, for the first time I think, Que suerte cover is silkscreened. Also the inside cover have been printed wrong side, it's a mistake that I like, reminds me my own!

I can't see buying stuff yet, but you could have it at me if you want (it's 5euro for 104 xerox pages + shipping). This issue include spanish stuff, and french artists as Dav Guedin, Bertoyas, Léo Quiévreux, Craoman, and a cover by Xavier Robel. My comic is not that good but well erf!
I like Que suerte for beginners art melted to others, with comic only, cheap price, handmade covers & collages inside - a must for xerox comic zine!

Centauroid

A response to Kurt's recent "Nucklavee" post, a drawing of a similar centaur which I did for a new book (soon to be published by Alkbazz).

THE 6TH CIRCLE

I'm doing a daily strip over at the PORK MAGAZINE site "INTERNET PORK". It's called "The 6th Circle", inspired by Bil Keane's death & my weird feelings about people hating on him on the day of his death. I've never been a fan of The Family Circus, most of the daily comic strips I've been into were published at least 30 years before I was born, with the exception of PEANUTS & GARFIELD when I was a kid, oh, I liked the FAR SIDE also. Anyhow, despite the Family Circus' milquetoast view of life, I feel a weird cartoonist's loyalty to Keane, in that he was a real cartoonist, unlike so many so-called cartoonists of today. So, in a strange way, The 6th Circle is a tribute to the Family Circus, it takes place in the hellish world of my Monsters, Weirdos & Creeps & the jokes are maybe even worse than those in the Family Circus.

I do the labels for a series of barrel aged craft brews from OAKSHIRE BREWING called HELLSHIRE. It's a collaboration between their Master Brewer Matt Van Wyk & myself. Here's a bunch of the beers at the opening event.
A whole mess of Hellshire II.
And I just knocked out 30+ characters for another card series.
I just knocked out 32 new characters.

Nucklavee, take 2.

Back in November of 2009, I was originally brought into EBD because Robert Adam Gilmour found my horrible drawing of the Nucklavee and helped me identify it(I had drawn it after reading about it, but then forgot where I had read it). On June 17, 2010, I posted here that I was working on a new version, because I so hated the first version. Well, I got sidetracked, but here is what I worked on today at work and then finished up at home tonight:

It's only been maybe a half hour since I finished it, and there are already things bugging me about it, but I'll let it sit and see what I think tomorrow morning.

Art Show

Here are some pics from an art show I participated in opened yesterday, it was at Little Berlin, here in Philly. The show was entitled "The Western Lands." It was a "post apocalyptic" vibe, the aftermath of cardboard cities.

The Taste Of Water

Currently working on a nice assignment: a page for a collection of comic summaries (adaptations) of Dutch films. Some old, some recent. It wild be a sort of coffee table book-like compendium. Last year we had a similar thing on Dutch literature, which was quite succesful. So it's nice to be in this boat.
Anyway, I picked De Smaak van Water/The Taste Of Water (1982) by Orlow Seunke. It is not a widely known film although it got quite some recognition and awards when it came out. It was inspired by a story by the Hungarian writer György Konrad. It is a touching small story about a once-cynical social worker who starts caring for a severely neglected child. I liked it then and I like it now. Don't know if this page does it justice. The final version of it will be in full colour.

Totentanz

A mural that I did in the Rumkammerat gallery in Copenhagen, situated at Nansensgade 35. If you happen to be in the area, check http://www.rumkammerat.dk/eng. Until November 19, I am exhibiting original pages from Sine Qua Non (of which th Danish edition was released there on October 28) plus some other stuff, like scraperboard art from my other books Bestiarium and 1348.

An interview about Sine Qua Non and other projects can be found here:

Hello
Here's a new linoleum print... To be right it's made of PVC (plastic), given by Ludovic Levasseur. I love that material, really hard and neat

This could be a kind of tricky creature, like those in the abyss, this one chase drugs dealer by imitating krokodil addict

Army of God

I have been working on a record sleeve for the Amsterdam-based outfit Army Of God. It's kind of 1980s-styled wave (which I like). If that's up your alley, the main song can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z9TTU9mF7A
The record should be out soon. I was given total artistic freedom (yay!), so I did a little twisting on the classic pieta.

HTRK

I went to my first gig since Goblin in febuary, I rarely go to gigs anymore. HTRK have a new record out which I dont have, but I have the first two and they are great; one of the members died about a year ago and they are down to just two members now.
A support band called Standish/Carlyon were really nice and atmospheric but when it got to HTRK, the sound levels were not right and some of the instruments just werent picking up, I felt sorry for the singer because it was her instruments and voice that was not picking up and she looked really uncomfortable not knowing whether her drum was going to work when she struck it and trying to sing loud enough. It looks like they gave up after 6 or 7 songs, which were able to create a pleasing enough swamp of sound but didnt have the impact they would have if everything was working. I really hope this didnt take the wind out their sails, it might have been the first date in the tour.

I selected the song that got me hooked and I hope it will hook you too. It was produced by Rowland S Howard.

hyel introducing post

hi!
i'm a little bit nervous to introduce myself.. because i'm not good and english..

anyway! i'm hyeyeol just call me hyel! and lived in seoul korea, good to see you!
um extually i've never thought about that my works are comprised in art
because i studyed comics and still studying comics..
beginning of my works are just junk for my desire

but now i'm so pleasure to join this interesting group.

i'm inspired by Ukiyo-e japanease style tattoo(Yirejeumi) that gives me strong impression only use line and face.
and i usually draw about Thanatos and eros especially the eros of narcissism and often contain mythicalness.
so my works are almost having symmetry structure like mirror.

the reason of the main characters of my works are having abnormal bodys
means perversive share or spurt of desire.
