Parade In Progress

Here's one of the colored pencil drawings I'm working on. This is the left half of a drawing. The centerpiece of the composition is a giant t-rex sort of character that you can just barely see in sketch form on the right. The idea is to inject an insane amount of color across the scene thru multi layered dash marks. I set the darkest area in the lower left corner which I'll emulate in the darker areas of the rest of the image once everything is colored. And I decided to make the ground difficult to make out as either an actual surface or space in which these things are all floating so it could pass as either. Also, you can't see it in the scan but the paper has a really thick watercolor paper tooth to it which gives the dash marks an interesting texture from underneath.

Looks like it'll be great, Aeron -- the other colored pencil drawings I've seen from you were amazing.

How big is this?

Also, just out of curiosity, what brand(s) of pencils are you using?

Good stuff, the style makes the critters look plump and hairy and there's nothing more enticing than a plump and hairy critter!
I especially like the legged eyeball.

Thanks, the size is 9 x 12 inches. The medium is a set of 36 colors of Mongol brand colored pencils. They have an awesome vintage logo similar to this http://www.pencilthings.com/servlet/the-698/Vintage-Mongol--dsh--Paint/Detail

And I've got a set of 24 colors of Design Watercolor pencils that I used on that Racers drawing I made last year. Those have slightly varying hues from the Mongol set that I'll be using randomly in this series.

If you decide to mess around with colored pencils, do yourself a favor and stay away from the cheaper Rose Art or Crayola brands. I spent a day experimenting with color vibrancy across a selection of brands and the cheap pencils really show their cost on the paper. They give off a really light weak color on the surface compared to the more expensive colored pencils. Don't cheap out on those things is all I gotta say!

If you have a Michaels Arts And Crafts in town, you can usually find a 40-50% off coupon in Sunday;s paper. Put it towards a 128 color set of Prismacolor.
Aeron, this is beautiful, If you and I were to ever trade drawings, I would love one of these. Very noice!

Can't wait to see this finished, the colors are intoxicating.
The T-rex like demon looks so pleased to be so nasty!

By the way, cheap B & W soft pencils also suck.

its like most things. you really DO get what you pay for. I use all kinds, cheap ghetto crapola and really fine quality and I can make due with both but if I have my druthers, I will always go higher.
