Revelations

Tonight I was cleaning out my studio and I found a bunch of pages from a sketchbook I was keeping in 2004 when we lived in Buffalo NY. It was filled to the brim with personal thoughts and comic strips done in a block style I no longer use. I am amazed however at how cool some of that stuff still reads. I was doing auto bio diary stuff as well as interpretations of poems in experimental layouts and all kinds of crap. It was really good. Something in me puckers tight as a drum though wehn I sit down to make a "book". I need to just make drawings in comic forms and use what works. I love how our sketchbooks can teach us more than anything or anyone if we give them a little time.

Chris you bugger, why haven't you posted some examples from your sketchbook? I'd love to see that stuff!!!
I completely agree with you about sketchbooks, there's the freedom to fuck up and try whatever you want. It's really tough to carry that freedom over to a finished book.

Yeah, I was putting all my energy into comics at the time before getting sidetracked with paint and galleries. I am now wanting to go back to books 100%. I was trying some cool stuff. I will post some from that book soon and from current books later. My scanner sucks which is why I haven't posted more. It is a labored process.

I totally agree! I've been doing some strips really quickly lately, and they seem really fresh to me. Cliche, though it may sound, sometimes you need to get your brain out of the process!

I need to pick up one of those moleskin sketchbooks everyone always raves about. Never seen one myself but when people crack into one it seems to take over their mind and force them to do "their moleskin skechbook sketches" instead of just randomly doodle in a sketchbook. Is there something about the grit of the paper or the nice binding that does that to people? I guess I'll have to find out for myself sometime.
