I've always been terrified by the idea of cities being bombed.

Hippocampe

I love drawing with a brush - While I do illustration on a long period, emptying space thinking of something else (and that's good too), with brush I just need to be very concentrated for a short time (maybe half an hour including sketch). I think it's also more alive cause of hazardous details coming.

GREETINGS, obscure art lovers,

I am proud to present the first issue of EXCESSIVE VOYEURISM - wicked art zine.
There are no strong zine releasing traditions in Lithuania so I decided to go for a change and to make a vigorous stir in Lithuanian underground art culture.The idea of self-published zine with bizarre artworks was born in summer 2011. The story of choosing the title for it...One of the references is Laura Mulvey's essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (written in 1973 and published in 1975), I thought that ideas suggested there also fits for visual art that has its own meaning/plot/story and adequate images, with ability to provide „visual pleasure through scopophilia“. As you will turn the pages you will see, that despite of differences between each artistic expression, there are something uniting them. It might be distinguished for sympathies to illustrative art & comics, traditional graphic prints and engravings, outsider/punk related art, hand drawings, collages, even some forms of performance art, also interests in philosophy, graphic violence, human body, nudity, (auto)eroticism, taboo, obsession, aggression, degeneration, horror, grotesque, demented visions and delusional experiences...

Family Fun

A random page from my sketchbook. The top is from a photograph from the fifties (i am guessing here), the bottom after a painting by a Jheronimus Bosch follower (imitator) from the 16th century. Funnily enough, I did not realise it at first how both sketches have teeth (or the lack of them) as subject.

I have been re-reading Roy Tompkins' Trailer Trash comic series recently. It is so good, that I am considering a return to brushes (I haven't used them over a decade!) Why oh why did T.T. have to end? *wailings*

Baba Yaga

Here is my interpretation of Baba Yaga. I had the idea for the image in my head in the style of a 15th - 16th century engraving, I think I translated that well through my digital technique.

Drawing Straws

Working on some lino cuts for a special anthology, to be realised later this year (although it's not quite sure yet whether the money for it will be there - I am mentioning this so there will be less chance of jinxing it). Anyway, this is just one design of five. Here are some quick tests which I have done while cutting away details.

Hmm, not so happy with the structure on the ground but at least no letters are in mirror view. That would have been plain embarrassing. There is still a little bit of fixing after this, but not much. Everybody who has done this, knows that it's particularly hard to know when exactly to stop.

The theme of cannibalism still occupies my mind. It has been said that the theme of drawing straws among shipwrecked sailors is a strictly theoretical one, because one dies of thirst long before hunger becomes a lethal problem. I wouldn't know...

Horror Book Covers

  ...I adore this cover, dont know who did it. I've said before how confusingly few great covers there are for genre books (particularly science fiction, where Richard Powers is one of the only artists who excites me), but I've been looking around anthologies from older horror editors like Aickman, Danby, Lamb, Haining, Wagner, Asquith, Chetwynd-Hayes, Bernard, Davis and Sutton, for good art and there is some. Alden Norton is a lesser known editor of the era.

  ...I just saw this for the first time today. I'd really love to have this but I've heard it is rare. Some other editions are called Random House Book Of Ghost Stories, seemingly with the beautiful color taken out.

  ...This art was done by a friend of M.R James, I cant remember his name but I think he had a go at writing too. There are a few interior images for this book as well in some editions.

 ...I own the first version and it looks less impressive now that I have seen a version that was probably closer to what the artist wanted.

 ...These two Brian Lee kids books are amazing. I had the first book when I was a kid and the art and holograms are lovely. I found out about the 3d book later and bought it a few years ago. This sort of art really inspires me, the artist used to have a website but I dont think it is around anymore and I cant find any other similar books by the same artist.
