Finished the sucker the other day. It's difficult to translate through this scanned version but the surface of the painting has a great thick textured gritty surface. If you're in the New York area you can check this out in person at the McCaig - Welles Gallery in Brooklyn as part of the Art Dorks Squared show. I've got some other paintings I'm working on in this style, I'll post some of those in the not too distant future.

Cool! This turned out really nice Aeron. I like the technique you used for the blocky structures in the background.
My only crit would be that the red cube snake seems less threedimensional than the rest due to the fact that unlike for the architechture you used the same red color for all sides of the cubes, and you didn't really use any strong value contrasts either.
Of course this might be intentional.

Thanks, my main contrast concern was the red line of blocks against the rest of the background. I tried pushing in some different colors around the blocks but wasn't satisfied, I think the deep reds seduced me into keeping them there. I put a lot of effort into trying to make things dirty and ugly looking, I think I accomplished that much! heh. I have a tendency to rework and rework things so this piece didn't have that luxury, but I'm quite comfortable with how it turned out. This is the first real painting I've done in a long time so I was getting my footing to some extent. I've got a few gessod stretched canvases I'm going to bang into this week and explore some of the more elaborate compositions I've had in my head for awhile.

Thanks and yeah I really dig Marcel Ruijters. I picked up a copy of troglobytes a long time ago. I love the bizarre underground civilization built around all the weird dungeon like architecture. Also I've got a lot of small and big paintings that I'm working on, I'll post some soon.
