Baba Yaga

Aeron Alfrey - Baba Yaga
Here is my interpretation of Baba Yaga. I had the idea for the image in my head in the style of a 15th - 16th century engraving, I think I translated that well through my digital technique.

Fantastic work. It's so insanely detailed, I love it. May I ask how long it takes you to do a piece like this?

Just fantastic. Where did the heads idea come from? I've never heard of that in her legend. I'm starting to prefer the idea of of giving legends a major makeover rather than just taking all the previous versions.

Thanks Robert and Marcel. This took me somewhere around 100 hours give or take ten or fifteen hours, very time consuming. I spent a good hour on some of those small heads alone.

The heads idea came well after I'd finished the original composition, I just started to imagine these mushroom like things growing out of the ground that had monstrous heads attached to them. The idea is that Baba's spells had deranged the very ground around her, sort of like mutations of wildlife in rivers near nuclear plants, the three eyed fish in The Simpsons. I wanted to take the original concept of Baba Yaga and take it in my own direction, I'm really happy with the results. And while this was made on commission, I'm thinking of offering this as a submission for the next Hopital Brut.

I join the kamarads, it's successfully wonderful, I like the idea of moving house & everything crawling! Textures reminds me of paintings on marbled stones

Oh, you should definitely submit it for Hôpital Brût!

hell yeah..this a goddamn impressive work you did there, aeron! especially since the last days also i've been drawing a cover for "Schwarz Metall wald", featuring a tree based on a similar kind of idea you seem to have had there of the tree to the right. but your tree-drawing kicks my drawing back to the garbagecan where it came from. hmm, maybe not..
but yeah..wow!
