Witch's Head

In light of Aeron's Halloween Witch project, i thought i'd post a cool giant Witch's Head from the Enchanted Forest just an hour from my home in Oregon. The whole theme park is just plain fantastic, but this Witch's Head was one of my favorite elements. No art from me online for a while, i'm working on projects, but i'm blogging like a motherf*cker on my other blogs, go check 'em out.

Skull Disco Vol:10 12"

Here's the art for the new Skull Disco 12", it's a collaboration with CrippaxxxAlmqvuist. Amongst other things the spiral, white on black lettering is by him, I'm really excited to see how it looks stuck to the middle of the record!

Puzzle Piece Beast - Under Sketch

The drawing was too big for the scanner window so I had to mesh two photos together, which explains the weird light/dark contrast near the center. This scan shows the thick tooth of the paper as all those black dots are actually white, just the thickness of the paper grit creating small shadows from the scanner light, I guess? The lines are actually a very faint blue and green but easier to see with contrast pulled up in greyscale. The finished piece will be very very colorful.

new ink "Fighters"

Ok, I'm back; done moving into the new house. I'm happy to say this is my first ink that I've done in the new place. In my fictional world that I've been working on, "The Fighters" are in the enforcers of the will of the "Six Virtues" (the high priests). The lightning bolt insignia on their chest was not only inspired by Neitzche's superman but actually Captain Marvel, in DC's Kingdom Come. I derived the name from the movie Dune by David Lynch. In the film there is a seen where a woman (a Fremen) gives birth to a baby and he is deemed a "fighter" by the man delivering him. I found that to be fascinating, since it reminded me so much of a more insect-like society, where you're born to a purpose.

Another loose unfinished digital collage I threw together. I don't know where I'll take this but I'm picturing this as the upper right corner of a larger landscape scene with a gigantic rotting head being pulled on wheels near the center of the composition. And evil as fuck bat things flying out of its gaping mouth.

This is something I'm doing as part of a community art project.

I used to use a bold, cartoony style as a teenager before getting into crosshatching. I've been getting back into it lately and have an idea of building virtual 'sets' that can be used for either animation or comics.

Here's one of many colored pencil drawings I've been working on. This still has a ways to go. I'm experimenting with building up multiple layered colors from light to dark. The background will have a few more colors worked into it which will help pop the background hills out more. You can't really see it in the scans but the bumpy thick tooth paper texture really gives a cool effect with the colored pencil scratch marks, kind of a microscopic relief effect.

SPARE PARTS

I have been putting off an update for a long time. I have been pretty busy in general..moving,working on a very large piece(due soon). Here are two new things..both hopefully going to a solo exhibit which is supposedly going to take place in October. We will see what happens....

The first piece is on a white heavy record sleeve that I found while cleaning. Kind of a combination of marker/acrylic paint/pencil/ink..even a little bit of colored pencil. Inspired by a Jack Vance book cover,an elvish bucktoothed loner in a trashy park.

Well this is the quickest collage I've ever made. I found this pic of a pile of skinned goat heads and instantly knew I wanted to use it for a spider like monster in one of my collages. So I threw a tarantula on there to help me remember until I'm ready to put some detail into it and give it a home in the Land Of The Moth.

Also, I'm excited to say that I'll be making an insanely detailed digital collage inspired by a scene out of Stephen King's "The Mist" involving a giant monster. It won't be done until next year but I'm already plotting out the composition and it's going to be amazing.

A few ads here from a Famous Monsters of Filmland, dated Sep. 1977 (the Star Wars issue). The first scan is proabably the most interesting -- I wonder how many of these underpants actually sold, and if any remain? They'd make a nice Halloween costume with these.

Electric energy from the other side

Some bizarre scene from the Land Of The Moth. Whenever I get the time to finish it I might set this on a stage with curtains pulled back and burned out chairs below. Sort of like the entire audience self combusted.

Loch Ness Test

A simple (unfinished) collage of Nessie I made as part of a project to illustrate several monsters for a children's book... didn't really get much farther than this one, but I was planning to include the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, dragons, unicorns, etc. -- your standard assortment of childhood fancies and fears.

The style and composition here are very basic and clear, with a kids' picture book design in mind, leaving room for text for example... though it could certainly use some additional details -- such as smaller fishes and plant life under the water, and somehow creating the illusion that the lower half of the body is actually submerged, not just pasted into the pic, and so on. I may fix it up at some point.

The background - at least the bottom half - is by the great space artist Chesley Bonestell, one of my favorite illustrators of all time.

Bat Attack

Sorry about my long absence, I've been really busy. I made this drawing because I've had two bats in my apartment in the past week, and I've turned into an up-all-night paranoid guy who is constantly looking over his shoulder, in fear of getting rabies. I figured that I might as well get a drawing out of all those sleepless nights.

Once I figure out how to scan my big drawings from the art show, I'll post those too.

A Floating Demon

Here's something I painted sometime last year, the original is around 5 x 4 inches so you're looking at it in great detail. This is one of a few dozen tiny paintings I made that I still need to go back in and tweak before I put them on sale. I'm going to work in a purple blue into the fur of this creature to make some shading effects for depth. I was inspired by some of the more simplified painting compositions of illuminated manuscript artworks for these.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry I have been awol for a while. I have been working on something partly inspired I think by Zeke. I think it was you Zeke who bugged me about posting more sketchbook shots. I got to thinking about how much I love working in my journal and how confident that stuff is compared to much of my other output. It suddenly dawned on me that perhaps the sketchbook for me will be less about preparing to make art as it is the art itself. I am thinking about writing a Xeric foundation grant to self publish a book that reproduces pages from my journals just as they are, flaws and all. It is filled with drawings, comics and such and people I know seem to like looking at them. I am also going to launch a blog that posts pages every few days of new pages that might become a new book. There is a lot going on right now but I promise to post some here soon. If you are on facebook, look for me and link as friends. I just joined to help draw traffic to the new blog . Something Like A Cowboy

A digital experiment where I tried to achieve the idea in my head with as few photographic pieces and as little manipulation as possible.

David, does this remind you of your stuff? Victor Cayro said he saw similarities towards your art. I think the face of the rider has a similarly abstracted face as seen in some of your work?

Anyway, I might pursue a larger version of this image where the whip wielding character is rounding up a herd of large animals that have faces similar to deformed fetuses. And just as with my Hob Bob fantasy world, this plays directly into the other fantasy world I'm working on related to The Land Of The Moth. In this part of the Moth lies a barren wasteland where cloaked figures riding tortured beasts whip their herds of abominable fetus faced livestock.

Sorry for the long hiatus on my part folks. I've been quite swamped with commission stuff, but I'll post some new art shortly.
In the mean time here are some impressions from my recent short trip to Vienna. I'm not sure how much I should post to keep it blog-related and not too boring, but I thought some of these pictures might be of interest to the EBD crowd...

Some architecture:










This final one is a Flak (anti-aircraft cannon) tower from WW2. Apparently they are so sturdy that it is impossible to blow them up whithout destroying the neighboring buildings, so seven of these monsters are still scattered around the city. This one is used as an aquarium I think.

Calling Vienna morbid is an old cliché, yet walking through its streets one does get the feeling that underneath the architectural splendour there's an age old miasma of decay. It's definitely something that is also celebrated in viennese culture. Here's a mural by Blanquet which kind of illustrates this. It's almost as if the alleyway is the parasite-infested underbelly of that classicist building.

Vienna's central cemetery is the largest in all of Europe (in terms of dead people buried there). The jewish section is crumbling and overgrown.
