An Ancient Beastiary

I drew these around the age of 8 from what I remember. All but a few of the pages are attached to a small pad of paper with every page (front and back) covered in creatures.

Ha, yeah I was pretty much born with monsters floating around inside my head. I've got huge boxes full of really old art, mostly from my teens, that I'll have to poke through and scan some of the more amusing pics.

Also, this little mini beastiary I found a few years ago and it was sort of the inspiration for my jumping into that series of hundreds of creatures. Some day I'm going to adapt some of these old scribbles into new versions. Particularly that odd centipede with the demon head creeping out from behind the dungeon wall, I love that one.

ok, so to begin with... WOW! I mean how cool is that. I only have a couple of lameo drawings I did of dennis the menace and crap left. I wish I had this kind of thing. Wow! It is amazing to see how things come back to us. I also have drawn the same subjects or at least liked monsters and robots all of my life. I would love to see a book of your 1000 monsters with these as artwork illustrating the intro or preface to the book. just amazing. Thanks for sharing.

i've seen a million kids drawings, and, these are VERY talented drawings for an 8 year old, and very blunt! there's an urgency to all these creatures, like you were trying to document them.

those would make wonderful dust jackets, or inner covers or something decorative for a book of your grown up drawings

Aeron- Were you exposed to horror stuff and comics as a kid?

Thanks David, I used to do these really detailed architectural drawings of the insides of haunted houses showing all the different rooms with secret passages that would fall into dungeons with monsters and traps all over the place. I would cut off one of my fingers, left hand!, to find one of those! The dust jacket idea sounds good, perhaps someday.

Luke, my father had piles of old DC horror comics, Heavy Metal magazines, R Crumb books, and a lot of weird art books all over the house that I was always picking through. So I was exposed to people like Moebius, Caza, Crumb, Giger, and the likes from a very early age. Not sure how far back but probably around 6 or 7. And I was a HUUGE fan of Fangoria and Gore Zone somewhere around the age of 9 on through my early teens. I loved horror movies and had fold out posters of Evil Dead, Motel Hell, Rawhead Rex, Cellar Dwellar, The Fly and any other awesome posters that came with Fangoria magazine in the late 80's plastered all over my walls. I named my first pet ( a hamster) Freddy after Freddy Krueger.

And being the horror movie freak, every weekend my brother and I would rent horror movies, mostly newer (at the time) 80's horror flicks from the videostore. But I was exposed to the classics, Hammer Films, Godzilla flicks from the 60's - 70's thanks to Sammy Terry, a horror host who played really good old horror films on weekends.

Here's a video clip of Sammy Terry introducing Zoltan, The Hound of Dracula..

Yeah, I thought you mentioned something like that, like your Dad had Crumb comics.
I'm jealous.
