Going totally Medieval

My friend Romuald Sourisse made this "medieval forgery" from the drawing I posted here on 20-01-2011 (Click the "Panotti" tag to see). You can see that he uses natural pigments on parchment, just like they did in the Middle Ages. I am really excited about the results and will return later this year to the insanely pictoresque town of Forcalquier to do more collaborations and learn about working with this type of material. After visiting his workplace, I can tell that Romuald is quite an expert.
Note: parchment is not paper. It is made from animal skin, often a sheep or goat.

Macro!

Hey, everyone! I've been busy with my new Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Sure, this isn't about monster drawings, but some of our crawly friends certainly do look monstrous when viewed up close. For example:

   From top to bottom: The Black Ground Beetle(very common in New Jersey), a Stink Bug, a plump grub, and "Polydesmus angustus," the flat-backed millipede. These will all certainly be helpful and influential in my future monster drawings. I have a whole bunch of macro photos on my Flickr page, and this is only after owning the lens for about 3 weeks. I can't wait until the summer brings the REAL specimens. Yup, beetle and caterpillar season is almost upon us!

I was recently asked by a buddy of mine to draw up some Germ tokens to coincide with the release of the new Magic: The Gathering set that came out a few weeks ago to be sold in the CCG shop where he works. His creative directions was "gross and drippy", and this is what I came up with:

Like a mix of Max Ernst's cut-up work, Salvador Dali, and Francis Bacon, only more imaginative and energetic than any and all of them in my opinion. Even so these aren't the best quality of pictures nor my favorites of his work. Scour the internet for his name, or better yet, buy one or more of his books, and you'll see what I am talking about.

Finished Dollmatrix Pages!

now here's 3 finished pics from the forthcumin' "dollmatrix" comic book (NO goddamn graphic novel!) drawn by me, zeke s. clough & marc van elburg. well, of course i can't really talk for them both, but atleast i think we have succeded to create art that walks the veeery thin line of being something between complete trash and arty farty pseudo wank. if everything turns out just right, then this book hopefully will see the day of light before this year's over. cross my heart, hope to die. R'n'R!

Funny thing happened today, I was practicing body art on my leg when my friend called and said "Do you know, that your photo is in newspaper?" I said NO and, of course, I felt confused. What happened... I'll tell you. 2008, in the best Lithuanian Gothic festival "Kunigunda Lunaria", one photographer asked me, if she could take my photo, because I looked interesting. I agreed. As you can see in the photos below, I had my hair shaved and some body art on my head, which is actually made  with eyes pencils. What I saw today, that the same photo is used in another newspaper, by the same office, where the headline is : "TATTOOS COULD SHUT THE DOOR IN FRONT OF YOUR NOSE FOR YOUR CAREER AND INVITE THE DISASTER". It is strange knowing that in 2008 the same publisher commented about my photo: "People would like to see this kind of beauty more often, not just in special occasions". It's just funny stuff, strange that I'm involved in this at all. :]
