Hanze Art

For the Summer, a number of drawing by me will be on display at the railway station of Deventer, situated in the east of The Netherlands. Many thanks to my friend Marcel Herms and Petrichor editors for inviting me to join this very cool project commemorating the city's historical past and its part in the Hansa union (a distant predecessor to the EU, one could say)

Feral Woman and Centaur

Another medieval post from me, and it has nothing to do with Black Metal or any other kind of music. (Well, the Mediaeval Baebes perhaps)

Fufu might recognize this one as a remix of a page that I did for his Silent Anthology which is still being compiled. My good friend Romuald Sourisse in France is working on a series of these drawings for a show which we will have in September. My book 1348 is out!

My new book "1348" (after the most disastrous year of the plague) is out and available from Le Dernier Cri for only 15 Euro. Lots of graphic medieval cruelty and weirdness in full colour and a 5-colour cover jacket in old school silkscreen in the typical cool Le Dernier Cri style. I am a happy, happy camper now that this has been realised! It is the very first book which I coloured digitally and it feels like a milestone. The closest thing to a depiction of sex in my medieval stuff so far. Well, medieval monks could not always avoid it either.

1348 and Inferno in Budapest

I just returned from Budapest, where I have been for a comics festival and an exhibition of pages from my upcoming book 1348 and Inferno (see above) which was translated into Hungarian in 2008 for Nyitott Konyvmuhely (don't ask me how that is pronounced) who also organised the festival. My show is part of a Dutch invasion which included other comic artists such as Joost Swarte (of RAW fame), Typex and the Lamelos crew. The whole deal is supported by the BKVB Art Fund in Amsterdam and the Dutch embassy. Quite an experience to be there! More information about the project can be found here: http://nl-hu.blogspot.com/

My show in Nancy, France

Until the 23rd of April 2011 will my show continue at the MJC Lillebonne, 14 Rue du Cheval Blanc in the centre of Nancy, France. This is one of the poster-size digital prints I have done with the support of the BKVB Art Fund in Amsterdam. They work really well as the eye-catching element as most of my original artwork tends to be small, not larger than A3 size.

The opening went nicely, in a friendly atmosphere and with lots of good snacks and drinks - yes, the French live up to their reputation, I must say, when it comes to that.

Still working on my '1348' book. This page is going to be in it, albeit in a different version. Probably with silkscreened colours. I am moving it from the inside pages to the (silkscreened) cover jacket as it does not quite fit the order of pages - there will be some sort of narrative order.
Note: the bear's fart traditionally announces the coming of Spring. And: the beehives look intentionally like mooncups.

Raising the dead

I just returned from a very, very inspiring week at the French salt mines. Well, a historical museum devoted to the salt mines of past times, in Arc-et-Senans to be precise, where the Pierre-Feuille-Ciseaux festival was held for a second time. While there was much emphasis on the typically French OuBaPo phenomenon (conceptional comics following playful limitations in the spirit of writers like Raymond Queneau and Georges Perec), I concentrated on doing linoleum cuts with the guys from the Hoochie Coochie crew, from Paris, who brought their press and tools. Here is a lino cut version that I did from the pic posted on August 31st.
