Holy Flying Piranhas

More or less an afterthought. A variation on the Saints book' back cover drawing with more Blemmyans. I tried my luck with more subdued colours than usual.

Sketchbook #39

Yet another sketchbook cover, painted front and rear with acrylics. Somehow, the front cover usually does not come out as naturally. I don't paint much so my technique gets a bit rusty.
Anyway, I can't keep myself from putting corpse-painted feral men through a lot of torture. Here is one being eaten by a giant viper pregnant with three little ones eating their way out (which was the medieval way of birth).
The elephant was thought of as a exemplary animal as it would not mate unless forced to. This is a cloven-hoofed evil variety however, protecting a Blemmyan.

Anyone for chess?

Working on the colours of a saint's story of eight pages. Here, Saint Teresa is bravely challenging five enemies of the faith for a game of chess: the wild man, the monkey, death, the devil and the Blemmyean. There will be captions (in Dutch, which hardly anyone on the planet could understand anyway) in the two top corners.

My book 1348 is out!

My new book "1348" (after the most disastrous year of the plague) is out and available from Le Dernier Cri for only 15 Euro. Lots of graphic medieval cruelty and weirdness in full colour and a 5-colour cover jacket in old school silkscreen in the typical cool Le Dernier Cri style. I am a happy, happy camper now that this has been realised! It is the very first book which I coloured digitally and it feels like a milestone. My show in Nancy, France

Until the 23rd of April 2011 will my show continue at the MJC Lillebonne, 14 Rue du Cheval Blanc in the centre of Nancy, France. This is one of the poster-size digital prints I have done with the support of the BKVB Art Fund in Amsterdam. They work really well as the eye-catching element as most of my original artwork tends to be small, not larger than A3 size.

The opening went nicely, in a friendly atmosphere and with lots of good snacks and drinks - yes, the French live up to their reputation, I must say, when it comes to that.

This was painted on plastic, so the colours have a weird-looking structure. Okay, I also fiddled with the PS buttons a bit, but I kind of like working on materials that are not quite suitable. The little guys on the left and right are my hybrid version of Blemmyae and Panotti, enemies of the true faith.
