LUBOK #11 is out
Proud to submit a few pages to this beauty: LUBOK #11. The whole book has been printed in Leipzig (Germany) as a set of linoleum cuts, which must be close to unique in the world. Featured artists include Christoph Ruckhäberle, Ewoud van Rijn and Koen Taselaar.

CRIELAARD/KAPRELES
a collaboration with chris crielaard from ca. 2001. he did the pencil drawing and the inking of the figure at the right, i did the rest. the second drawing was published in 2003 in HUSTLER as part of their "drawn to the dark side" contest.

i only have one year of silkscreening by myself behind me, so here i mostly tried to learn more about it

Second is the poster i did for Reijo Kärkkäinen exhibition here at the Garage L.. Reijo came with his family here to make a book, a show and work in our place (And also have holydays!). We do as we can to satisfy him, it's not easier as here everything goes slowly... but sunny!

I'm Forced To Write Something...
...in order not to be kicked out, at least that was the prerequisite for joining this blog. So, I'll tell you people out there, friends and associates, what's going on. I've completely stopped drawing anything at all, since summer. I've done other things, creative things, but then lots of time has been spent working my day-job. It's ok. Then, this spring I started taking a course in literature, and it's great. Reading the classics, naturally.
Just the other day I received an email from publisher Last Gasp in San Francisco, with a mention that I'm in a book called "Pop Psychedelic" that they distribute (or co-publish?). I didn't even remember what that was all about, it's been something like two or three years since I contributed a couple of images, and I don't even recall what they were. In any case, this must be a world-record of slowness on behalf of a publisher, even if I admit to being pretty slow myself before deadlines once in a while, but still.
Other than that, continuing -albeit with very little energy- the Shooting Star Gallery venture. Last spring we started out with a nice show here in Stockholm, then we all had better things to do, and less money.
I believe money is an issue here, with me and everyone else. No-one ever pays me anything for any of my images that are published, honestly. The New York Times are the only ones who ever did so, thank you NYT.
I will do some prints a.s.a.p. that are ordered from Shooting Star Gallery (you can, too!) and that will paradoxically give money. So, it seems that prints are in, but to be published in some random magazine is out. And for me, that means for ever, almost, unless you do make an excruciatingly awesome zine that is so cool that I just have to be in it.

I'm taking part in the project/show "Image Duplicator" in London. It's basically a response to the huge Roy Lichtenstein retrospective that is currently on display at the Tate Modern.
Here's the project outline:
WHERE: A show at the Orbital Gallery, Leicester Square, London
WHEN: May 16th-31st, - a week pre and post the end of the Tate's Lichtenstein show, with a possibility of extending it for another week after.
HIGH CONCEPT: Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein currently has a show on at the Tate. While the public is intimately familiar with his work, what they may be unaware of is how closely many of his images were "appropriated" from comic artists like Irv Novick, Russ Heath, Jack Kirby, John Romita and Joe Kubert, who received no fee or credit.
Is this an act of brilliant recontexturalisation? The elevation of commercial "low" art to "high" art? Art world snobbery? Artistic licence? Cultural annexation? Gallery shortsightedness? Or something else?
This show is a chance for real comic-book artists (and other "commercial artists" - illustrators, designers etc) to ask these kinds of questions and share their views, via their work.
THE PLAN:Every interested comic artist should "re-reappropriate" one of the comic images Lichtenstein used, and rework it, using some of their 'commercial art' drawing skills, to warp and twist it into something interesting and original, and in the process to comment on this type of appropriation.
The IMPORTANT thing to stress is that you'd be going back to the source material and re-reappropriating Coletta, Novick, Kirby et al - NOT copying Lichtenstein

more from the archive, a drawing from 2003. someone cleaned his archive! i forgot about this one. it's A3 size & difficult to xerox and scan without losing bits so i pasted some bits together. i used an old xerox & added the stuff from the original. not great, but it will do.

RUIJTERS/KAPRELES COLLAB FROM 2003
this collaboration was done for a cover of "rotkop", a belgian monthly zine, xeroxed with a silkscreened or offset cover, that ran for less than a year. the "religion" issue was never printed due to serious incompetence of the editor (each issue had another editor) who obviously felt i was trespassing on his domain, which wasn't a first time since i collaborated with him on several occasions before. good artist, but a bit insecure. oh well ... this is a colored xerox to show where the colors had to be applied when being silkscreened. the next issue, i forgot the theme, was also never printed. the second drawing is based on a photo which i altered, obviously. the body is "borrowed" from adult model laura lion btw.
DICK LAURENT IS DEAD

More Freelance Monsters
Been getting tons of work lately, so this 100% freelance may work out after all. I really hope it does, because I truly enjoy doing it. Anyway, here are a couple projects I'm working on.
From top to bottom: Ghouls, A Troll, Princess of Stones, King of Miseries.
The first two are for the RPG Burning Wheel. These are just the scanned in pencils with some Photoshop work. The finals will be ink drawings, a la The Monster Manual. Ghouls are corpse eating creatures, so it seems like they should have powerful digging claws and be covered with filth. I probably need to make them less zombie-like. As for the troll, I somewhat followed the TSR design. The limbs should be longer, with bigger hands.
The second two are two of seven demonic tarot cards I did for the short film, Interpreter of Signs, being directed by Academy Award-winning make up effects artist, Tom Woodruff Jr.
